Handover in person, offer within 12 hours from more than 25 dealer bids.

Step 1 of 5Brand
Which brand is your watch?

We buy watches across Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Anyone in Lucerne with a luxury watch to sell receives the highest bid from more than 25 partner dealers in Switzerland as a binding offer, within 12 hours on working days. The valuation is made from photographs and details, free and without obligation. The handover takes place in person in the city or in the surrounding communes.

Lucerne is one of the best-known watch shopping cities in the world, though almost entirely for new pieces. Around Schwanenplatz, along Grendelstrasse and in Kapellgasse, watch shops stand side by side, and a large share of their customers arrive with tour groups. Buying a used watch from a local resident is a sideline for those businesses. Someone in Lucerne wanting to sell a Rolex, Omega or IWC is often met with a cautious figure, or with a suggestion to leave the piece on consignment and wait.

Where does the handover take place in Lucerne?

A personal appointment is arranged once the offer has been accepted. Usual places are a bank branch in the city centre, somewhere between the station and Schwanenplatz, your office or practice in Lucerne, Kriens or Emmen, or your own home. Anyone who wants to watch the payment arrive tends to choose their own bank.

The catchment area extends well beyond the city: Kriens and Horw to the south, Emmen and Ebikon to the north, Meggen and Adligenswil along the lake, and Root in the Rontal. Lucerne station is the hub for the whole of central Switzerland, and the A2 and A14 lead straight into the city. Appointments in Nidwalden, Obwalden or elsewhere in the canton of Lucerne are equally possible.

Which municipalities belong to the Lucerne region?

The City of Lucerne and 21 other municipalities form the LuzernPlus association, which stretches from Rain to Vitznau and from Schwarzenberg to Root. Its members also include Rothenburg, Malters and Weggis, as well as Hergiswil in the canton of Nidwalden. Küssnacht in the canton of Schwyz left the association at the start of 2018 but remains within the area of the Lucerne agglomeration programme. The cantonal border makes no difference to the handover, but tax questions follow the law of the canton where you live.

Which public offices play a part when you sell a watch in Lucerne?

Selling a watch to a dealer requires neither a permit nor a notary. Under Swiss law a contract needs no particular form unless the law prescribes one (Art. 11 of the Code of Obligations), and in a sale the goods and the money change hands at the same time (Art. 184 para. 2). Public offices only matter for side questions, such as a certified signature or your tax return.

How a sale from an estate works is explained in the guide to selling an inherited watch.

Why there is no shop

Retail space in Lucerne's old town is among the most expensive in Switzerland, and that rent has to be earned back through the trading margin. Uhrenkontor runs no shop and carries none of those costs. The partner dealers calculate their bid from the watch alone and never receive your contact details.

Discretion is the second reason. The watch shops in Lucerne are built around passing trade and are correspondingly busy in season. Unpacking a valuable watch in front of strangers is not an appealing prospect for most sellers. An agreed appointment in a quiet place solves that, and the inspection usually takes less than half an hour.

How selling a watch in Lucerne works

  1. Describe the watch. Brand, model, reference number (the model number, usually on the case between the lugs), condition, what is included and at least three photographs, entered in the form at the top of this page. It takes about three minutes.
  2. Dealers bid. More than 25 partner dealers assess the anonymised enquiry. The highest bid is passed on as a binding offer within 12 hours on working days.
  3. Check the offer. Valid for several days, free and without obligation, subject to condition, authenticity and completeness matching the description.
  4. Handover and payment. An appointment in Lucerne or nearby, inspection of the watch on the spot, payment in cash, by bank transfer or by Twint.

The basics on value factors, completeness and routes to a sale are covered in the guide to selling a watch in Switzerland. Brand pages: sell a Rolex and sell an Omega.

Frequently asked

Selling a watch in Lucerne.

Do you also come to Kriens, Horw or Meggen?

Yes. The handover in person is possible throughout the Lucerne agglomeration, so Kriens, Horw, Emmen, Ebikon, Meggen, Adligenswil and Root, and on request further into the canton or into Nidwalden and Obwalden. The appointment is arranged once you accept the offer and travel costs you nothing.

Can I bring my watch in somewhere in Lucerne?

No, Uhrenkontor has no shop in Lucerne. You describe the watch online with photographs, receive the best dealer bid within 12 hours on working days, and after accepting it arrange a personal appointment, for example at a bank in the city centre or at your home.

How soon can an appointment in Lucerne be arranged?

Usually within a few working days of your accepting the offer. Lucerne is easy to reach by rail and via the A2 and A14, so appointments here can generally be set at short notice. The offer remains valid for several days, which leaves you time to choose a moment that suits.

Do you buy inherited watches and estates in Lucerne?

Yes, provided the market value is roughly CHF 3,000 or above. Vintage pieces, watches needing a service and watches without box or papers are valued as well. With an estate, submit each watch separately with at least three photographs so the dealers can judge each one on its own.

Does selling my watch in Lucerne have to be notarised?

No. Swiss law prescribes no particular form for the sale of a watch (Art. 11 of the Code of Obligations), so no notary is needed. The contract is formed when you accept the offer. At the handover the watch is inspected and paid for, with a receipt for cash payments. A certification is only needed if you want one.

Which office answers wealth tax questions in Lucerne?

The tax office of your municipality, because in the canton of Lucerne the municipalities assess private individuals. In the city that is the City of Lucerne tax office; the self-employed are assessed by the cantonal tax service. What counts is your wealth on 31 December, when the proceeds of a sold watch appear as cash or a bank balance.

I live in Hergiswil or Küssnacht. Can I still sell in Lucerne?

Yes. The place of handover does not have to match where you live; you choose the meeting point, in Lucerne or at home. Hergiswil (NW) is a LuzernPlus member and Küssnacht (SZ) lies within the Lucerne agglomeration programme, but tax follows your canton of residence. Wealth tax questions therefore go to the Nidwalden or Schwyz tax authorities.
