Selling a Panerai in Switzerland works best with the full PAM reference and through a buyer who compares several dealer bids. Value depends on the PAM number, the case size, the movement, whether hand-wound or automatic, along with condition and completeness. Luminor, Radiomir and Submersible are the sought-after lines, and limited special editions have their own collector demand.

Uhrenkontor is a platform of Solidas GmbH, entered in the commercial register of the canton of Schwyz with its registered office in Schindellegi SZ. Over 25 partner dealers across Switzerland assess your Panerai from watch data and photos, without seeing your contact details. On working days the highest bid reaches you within 12 hours as a binding offer, free of charge, without obligation and valid for several days.

What determines the value of a Panerai?

PAM reference and year of production

Every Panerai carries a reference with the code PAM and a number, for example PAM00001 for the Luminor Marina from 1997, the first year of international marketing. The PAM number identifies model, size, movement and version unambiguously. Dealers work from these details; without a PAM number an enquiry makes little sense.

Case size of 40, 42, 44 or 47 mm

Panerai builds most models at 44 mm, with smaller versions at 40 and 42 mm and the large 47 mm executions that go back to the historic military watches. Demand is spread unevenly: 42 and 44 mm are the most common sizes, 47 mm appeals to collectors and 40 mm to a smaller group of buyers.

Hand-wound or automatic, supplied or in-house calibre

Early models after 1997 used supplied movements, many of them hand-wound calibres on a Unitas base. Since the 2000s, Panerai has increasingly fitted its own calibres, such as the automatic P.9010 with three days of power reserve. Dealers distinguish between watches with supplied movements, watches with in-house movements and historically interesting early references; all three groups find buyers, but on different terms.

Condition, accessories and service history

The crown-protecting bridge of the Luminor, the case back and the lugs show wear first. The full set comprises the original box, warranty card, manual, spare strap, strap-changing tool and purchase receipt. A service before the sale is not necessary, but any service records from Panerai should be included.

Which Panerai models are most in demand?

The Luminor with its distinctive crown-protecting bridge goes back to the 1950 watch for the Italian navy. The Luminor Marina at 44 mm, the hand-wound Luminor Base, the slimmer Luminor Due and the Luminor 1950 with domed crystal and in-house calibre are the most traded Panerai models.

The Radiomir is the original model of 1936 with a cushion-shaped case and wire lugs; the Radiomir 1940 has solid lugs and a conical crown. Hand-wound Radiomir models at 45 or 47 mm are asked for above all by collectors, while smaller versions appeal to wearers looking for a plain watch.

The Submersible is the diver's watch with a rotating bezel, a collection in its own right since 2019. Models at 42 and 44 mm in steel, titanium or Carbotech, and the limited editions linked to the navy, find buyers; with limited runs the dealers check numbering and certificate.

Special editions and boutique models in small runs form a group of their own. Their value depends on the size of the run, the completeness of the packaging and collector interest, not on the list price alone.

How selling your Panerai works

  1. Fill in the form: In around 3 minutes you enter the PAM reference, size, condition and completeness and upload photos, including the case back with its engravings.
  2. Valuation by over 25 partner dealers: Dealers only ever see watch data and photos, never your contact details. On working days the highest bid reaches you within 12 hours as a binding offer.
  3. Decide without pressure: The offer is valid for several days, free of charge and without obligation. It applies subject to condition, authenticity and completeness matching your description.
  4. Handover in person and payment: Handover anywhere in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, for example at a bank branch, a notary's office, your workplace or your home. After the check, payment follows in cash, by bank transfer or by Twint. Where something differs, you receive an adjusted offer at no cost.

How to recognise a reputable buyer

A reputable buyer asks for the PAM reference and the engravings on the case back before naming a bid. Anyone valuing a Panerai only by size and general impression either does not know the brand or is building in a large safety margin.

Check the company: a commercial register entry, a legal notice and a contactable address are the minimum standard. Anonymous listings, time pressure or a request to send the watch in advance "for inspection" are warning signs, however high the quoted bid may be.

Pay attention to the payment route. Payment should be traceable and documented: in cash against a signed receipt and purchase contract, by bank transfer or by Twint. A handover at a bank branch or a notary's office protects both sides.

More criteria and a comparison of the selling routes are set out in the guide to selling a watch in Switzerland and under how it works.

Frequently asked

Selling a Panerai.

Can I sell my Panerai without box and papers?

Yes, Uhrenkontor buys Panerai watches without box and papers. The partner dealers check the PAM reference, the case back engravings and the movement from the photos and at handover. A full set with warranty card, original box and strap-changing tool makes resale easier and is normally rated higher by dealers.

Should I have my Panerai serviced before selling it?

No, a service before the sale is not necessary. Uhrenkontor also buys Panerai watches that are due for servicing, and the dealers take condition into account in their bid. An overhaul paid for yourself is rarely recovered in full on sale. Existing service records from Panerai should be included.

Do you buy early Panerai from the 1990s and limited editions?

Yes, early references from 1997, boutique editions and limited special models are purchased. With early watches the originality of dial, luminous material and movement counts, as does the production year letter on the case back. With limited runs the dealers check numbering and certificate. Describe origin and condition in the form.

How quickly do I receive an offer for my Panerai?

On working days you receive the highest bid from the over 25 partner dealers within 12 hours as a binding offer. It is valid for several days, free of charge and without obligation, and applies subject to condition, authenticity and completeness matching the description at handover.

Where do I find the PAM reference of my Panerai?

The PAM number appears on the warranty card and usually on the case back, together with the letter for the production year and the serial number within the run. On some models it is also noted inside the box. Give the full number in the form so dealers can identify model and movement reliably.

Do I have to pay tax on the proceeds of my Panerai?

Capital gains on movable private assets are generally tax-free in Switzerland. It is different where the tax authority assumes commercial dealing, for example with frequent buying and selling. This is not legal or tax advice; if in doubt, ask your cantonal tax office or a fiduciary.

Why is the buying price for my Panerai lower than on Chrono24?

Chrono24 shows asking prices, not prices actually achieved. Many Panerai watches look very similar, but the PAM references differ in movement, case and material. A listing with a similar picture therefore says little about your watch; the exact reference is what counts. When buying, a dealer ties up capital, carries warranty and price risk, and needs a margin.

Why listing prices on Chrono24, Ricardo or Tutti sit above the buying price
