Which brand is your watch?

We buy watches across Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Anyone in Chur with a luxury watch to sell receives the highest bid from more than 25 partner dealers in Switzerland as a binding offer, within 12 hours on working days. The valuation is free and without obligation and is made from photographs and details. The handover takes place in person in Chur or in one of the Grisons resorts.

Chur is the capital and traffic hub of the Grisons, the point from which the Rhaetian Railway and the pass roads lead into the Engadine and on to Davos, Klosters, Arosa and the Lenzerheide. The canton's watch trade, however, is concentrated not in Chur but in St. Moritz, where brand boutiques serve an international holiday clientele. For selling a used Rolex, Patek Philippe or Omega, the options across the canton remain thin, and residents of Chur, Domat/Ems or Landquart have usually driven to Zurich.

Where does the handover take place in Chur?

The meeting is arranged once the offer has been accepted. Usual choices are a bank branch in central Chur, near the station or in the old town, your chambers or office, or your home. For second-home owners and holiday guests, a handover in the resort is equally possible, for instance at a bank in St. Moritz, Davos or Klosters, by arrangement and depending on the season.

The catchment area covers Chur with Domat/Ems and Landquart, the Prättigau with Klosters and Davos, Arosa, the Lenzerheide and the Engadine with St. Moritz. Chur lies on the A13 and is about 75 minutes from Zurich by rail. Appointments in the side valleys are planned around journey times and conditions on the passes.

Which regions of the Grisons does Chur cover?

The Grisons is divided into eleven regions, and cantonal law assigns every municipality to one of them. Chur is the main town of the Plessur region, which also includes Arosa and Churwalden. Following municipal mergers, Haldenstein, Maladers and Tschiertschen-Praden are now part of the city of Chur. The table shows the regions around Chur together with Prättigau/Davos and the Maloja region, home to St. Moritz.

Region Main town Municipalities (selection)
Plessur Chur Chur, Arosa, Churwalden
Imboden Domat/Ems Domat/Ems, Bonaduz, Felsberg, Flims
Landquart Landquart Landquart, Maienfeld, Trimmis, Zizers
Albula Albula/Alvra Vaz/Obervaz, Lantsch/Lenz, Surses
Prättigau/Davos Klosters Davos, Klosters, Schiers, Grüsch
Maloja Samedan St. Moritz, Samedan, Pontresina, Celerina/Schlarigna

Who handles wealth tax in the Grisons?

In the canton of the Grisons, the cantonal tax administration applies the tax act (Art. 165), while the municipalities carry out preparatory work (Art. 169). Wealth tax is based on the position at the end of the tax period, which is the calendar year, so 31 December counts (Art. 66 and 68). Household effects and personal belongings are exempt (Art. 58 para. 3); whether a valuable watch counts as such depends on the tax authority's practice.

A gain on selling a privately held watch is tax-free (Art. 16 para. 3 of the Federal Direct Tax Act). The proceeds, however, form part of your wealth at the end of the year as cash or a bank balance. If your only link to the Grisons is a holiday home, you are taxable there because of the property (Art. 4 of the Tax Harmonisation Act), and the rest of your wealth is taxed where you live. This is not tax advice; the relevant tax authority answers individual questions.

Why there is no shop

Premises in Chur or St. Moritz would mean rent, staff and security, and those costs would have to be covered by the trading margin, which is to say by your offer. Uhrenkontor operates no sales floor. The partner dealers calculate their bid from the watch data and photographs alone and never see your contact details.

The second reason is discretion. Whether in Chur or on holiday in the Engadine, nobody selling a valuable watch wants to lay it on a counter in front of passing customers. An agreed appointment at a bank or at your home replaces the shop visit, and the inspection on the day usually takes less than half an hour.

How selling a watch in Chur works

  1. Describe the watch. Brand, model, reference number (the model number, usually on the case between the lugs), condition, what is included and at least three photographs, entered in the form at the top of this page. It takes about three minutes.
  2. Dealers bid. More than 25 partner dealers assess the anonymised enquiry. The highest bid is passed on as a binding offer within 12 hours on working days.
  3. Check the offer. Valid for several days, free and without obligation, subject to condition, authenticity and completeness matching the description.
  4. Handover and payment. A personal appointment in Chur or the Grisons, inspection of the watch, payment in cash, by bank transfer or by Twint.

What determines value and which routes to a sale exist is explained in the guide to selling a watch in Switzerland. Brand pages: sell a Rolex and sell an Omega.

Frequently asked

Selling a watch in Chur.

Do you also come to Davos, St. Moritz or the Lenzerheide?

Yes. The handover in person is possible throughout the Grisons, including Domat/Ems, Landquart, Davos, Klosters, Arosa, the Lenzerheide and the Engadine with St. Moritz. Appointments in the side valleys are planned around journey times and the season, and travel costs you nothing in every case.

Can I bring my watch in somewhere in Chur?

No, Uhrenkontor has no shop in Chur. The sale starts online with photographs and details of the watch, and the best bid from more than 25 dealers follows within 12 hours on working days. After you accept, an appointment is arranged at a place of your choosing in the Grisons.

How soon can an appointment in Chur be arranged?

Usually within a few working days of your accepting the offer. Chur is easy to reach via the A13 and by rail; appointments in the Engadine or in Davos need a little more notice, particularly in winter. The offer remains valid for several days, and you decide time and place.

I am only in the Engadine on holiday. Can I still sell?

Yes, provided the handover takes place in Switzerland. Payment is made in cash, by bank transfer or by Twint, as you prefer. Describe the watch online, and the offer follows within 12 hours on working days and stays valid for several days. The appointment is then arranged in St. Moritz, Davos or another resort.

Are Haldenstein, Maladers and Tschiertschen-Praden part of Chur?

Yes. All three became part of the city of Chur through municipal mergers. A handover there is just as possible as in the city centre, for example at your home or at a bank branch of your choosing. You agree the place and time after accepting the offer, and the journey costs you nothing.

I own a holiday home in the Grisons. Where are the proceeds taxed?

Usually where you live. A holiday home makes you taxable in the Grisons for the property (Art. 4 of the Tax Harmonisation Act), not for movable private assets. The gain on a privately held watch is tax-free, but the proceeds count towards your wealth at year-end. Binding answers come from your local tax authority. This is not tax advice.

Which region do Davos and St. Moritz belong to?

Davos belongs to the Prättigau/Davos region, whose main town is Klosters, and St. Moritz to the Maloja region, whose main town is Samedan. That is how the cantonal act on the division into regions, in force since 1 January 2016, assigns the municipalities. Whatever the region, wealth tax is handled by the cantonal tax administration.
